The BIST 100 Index has surged to approximately 9,860, achieving a nine-week peak as market participants closely monitor the shifts in Turkey's economic policies, which have recently favored more traditional approaches.

In November, the central bank held its key interest rate steady at 50% for the eighth consecutive meeting. Inflation figures showed a marginal decline, easing to 47.1% in November from 48.6% in October. However, inflation has exceeded market expectations for the last three months, leading investors to reconsider the timeline for anticipated rate cuts.

Moreover, the central bank revised its inflation forecasts, raising expectations for the end of 2024 to 44% from 38%, and for the end of 2025 to 21% from 14%.

Since the start of 2024, the BIST 100 has appreciated by 2,717 points, or 36.37%, based on trading activity for a contract for difference (CFD) tracking this benchmark. Analysts project the Turkish Stock Market to reach an estimated 9,829.61 points by the end of the current quarter, with a further outlook suggesting a trade at 9,488.46 points in the coming year.

Investment Strategy:

Given the current economic environment and expected performance of the BIST 100 Index, a cautiously defensive strategy seems appropriate. Here's the breakdown:

1. Short-Term Positioning (Next Quarter):

Based on the expected decline (-3.50%) for the next quarter and the forecasted level of 9,829.61 points, consider a short position on the BIST 100 via futures. This aims to capitalize on the anticipated decrease in the index value in the short term. Ensure to set a stop-loss to mitigate potential adverse movements, given the volatile nature of the market.

2. Long-Term Positioning (Next Year):

With the expected yearly decrease of -6.86%, supplement the short position with long put options on the BIST 100 Index to hedge against further potential declines. Striking the options at slightly above the current market level ensures protection, taking advantage of the potential drop to the forecasted 9,488.46 point level. This allows for limited risk if the market unexpectedly rebounds.

3. Monitoring Macro-economic Indicators:

Continuously monitor Turkey's central bank policies, inflation rates, and economic growth indicators to adjust positions accordingly. Since economic conditions are fluid and may shift sentiment, staying informed will be crucial for timely exits or adjustments of positions.

4. Risk Management:

Given the high volatility seen historically, employ tight risk management strategies. Diversify investments across other stable international indices to mitigate country-specific risks, ensuring not all capital is exposed to this market.

This strategy offers a balance of taking advantage of expected market downturns while safeguarding against unexpected upturns through options, ensuring a calculated exposure to the Turkish stock market.
