The price of arabica coffee futures has soared beyond $3.20 per pound, approaching the record high of $3.50 per pound established on December 10. This surge is primarily fueled by ongoing concerns regarding adverse weather conditions affecting Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer.
The Minas Gerais region, which is pivotal for coffee production, has experienced below-average rainfall, severely disrupting crop growth. As a result, fears of reduced yields for upcoming harvests have intensified, particularly regarding the 2025/26 crop, with analysts estimating a 5% year-over-year decline in production.
Market analysts were further rattled when Volcafe, a major player in the coffee trading sector, downgraded its projections for Brazil's arabica output by 11 million bags, bringing the total to 34.4 million bags. This reduction translates to an alarming 8.5 million bag deficit for the fifth consecutive year.
This year alone, arabica coffee prices have surged approximately 70%, breaking the ceiling of prices not seen since 1977. Contributing factors include severe drought conditions in key production areas such as Brazil and Vietnam, alongside increasing global demand.
Since the start of 2024, coffee prices have risen by 133.46 USD/Lbs or 70.87%, as evidenced by trading on a contract for difference (CFD) tracking this commodity's benchmark market. According to projections based on global macroeconomic models and analyst expectations, coffee is anticipated to stabilize around 312.39 USD/Lbs by the end of this quarter, with a longer-term outlook pointing towards a price of 339.38 USD/Lbs within the next 12 months.
