The Russian ruble has fallen below 96 per USD, hovering near its one-year low of 97.5 achieved on October 16th. This decline results from the gradual easing of capital controls by the Federal government, which has outweighed the effects of a more aggressive stance from the Bank of Russia. Export-oriented companies in Russia are facing heightened payment difficulties due to sanctions impacting the Moscow Exchange, complicating their abilities to access foreign exchange required for operational transactions and converting revenues back to rubles.

In response, the Federal government has further reduced the mandatory conversion requirement for leading export sectors from 80% to 25%, markedly diminishing demand for rubles. The currency is also under additional strain due to a pessimistic outlook surrounding the Chinese economy, which dampens prospects for foreign demand for Russian exports.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Russia raised its key interest rate to a historic 21% in October as inflation expectations rise.

In recent fluctuations, the USDRUB rallied by 0.7531 or 0.77%, reaching 99.0027 on November 4, up from 98.2496 in the previous session. Analysts anticipate the ruble will stabilize around 99.20 by the end of this quarter, with projections suggesting a future decline to 104.87 within the next twelve months.

Investment Strategy:

Given the current market conditions and expected trends in the RUB/USD exchange rate, the following investment strategy can be considered:

1. Short Position on RUB/USD:

With the forecast indicating a decline in the ruble's value to 104.66 over the next year and the projection of a further weakening in the short term, it would be prudent to take a short position on the RUB/USD. The current exchange rate is approximately 95.25, and the expectation is that the ruble will reach 96.17 by the end of the quarter.

2. Options Strategy:

Consider purchasing put options on RUB/USD, which will increase in value as the ruble depreciates against the dollar. This could provide a hedge against volatility and an opportunity to capitalize on the anticipated ruble weakness. Aim to buy options with a strike price slightly below the expected levels, ensuring potential profitability from further ruble depreciation.

3. Interest Rate Dynamics:

The increase in the Bank of Russia's key interest rate to 19% suggests attempts to stabilize the currency and curb inflation. However, with inflation forecasted to reach 6.5%-7% and current inflation at 9.1%, domestic challenges remain. This supports the expectation of continued ruble weakness and thereby strengthens the case for taking a bearish stance.

4. Monitoring Economic Indicators:

Remain vigilant regarding US economic data and Federal Reserve policy changes as they could alter the strength of the dollar and subsequently affect the RUB/USD exchange rate. Adapt the strategy accordingly if signs of a ruble recovery or dollar weakness emerge.

This strategy prioritizes short-selling and protective puts to capitalize on expected ruble depreciation while hedging against volatility. Regular reviews of economic indicators and interest rate policies are essential to adjust the strategy as necessary.
