The Russian ruble has taken a significant hit, falling nearly 7% to trade at over 110 rubles per USD. This marks the lowest value on record since the initial turmoil following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as escalated sanctions further dampen prospects for foreign capital inflows.
In a decisive move, the United States has sanctioned Gazprombank, the last major financial institution previously exempt from penalties, effectively halting the transfer of payments for Russian gas from foreign markets. Additionally, 49 other banks were targeted, prompting markets to acquire foreign currency to settle obligations before facing exclusion from the global financial system.
Further pressure is being placed on the ruble as Moscow relaxes capital controls, a strategy aimed at facilitating budget financing through a weaker currency. The mandatory foreign exchange conversions for export revenues have decreased by 25% from earlier this year, significantly curtailing demand for rubles.
As for future projections, the USDRUB fell 1.4939 or 1.38% to 106.5016 on November 29, down from 107.9955 in the preceding session. Analysts anticipate the ruble to trade at 99.88 by the close of this quarter, while a forecast of 105.09 is predicted for a year ahead.
Investment Strategy:
Current Market Assessment: The Russian ruble (RUB) is under significant depreciation pressure due to escalated sanctions, decreased foreign capital inflows, and relaxed capital controls. The market forecast suggests further weakening in the ruble, with expectations of a decline over the next quarter and year.
