The benchmark KOSPI experienced a sharp decline of 2.8%, closing at 2,361 points on Monday. This marks a continuation of losses from the previous week and rresents the index's lowest level in over a year. The downturn is attributed to concerns over prolonged political instability. Over the weekend, President Yoon narrowly avoided impeachment due to backlash surrounding his handling of a martial-law decree. Nevertheless, pressure has intensified, with opposition parties vowing to seek his removal from office.
The ongoing political turmoil has taken a toll across various sectors. Shares of dnse company LIG Nex1 plunged 9.4%, reaching its lowest in three months. Similarly, LG Chem, a chemical giant, saw a decline of 7.5%, marking its weakest performance since March 2020. Airlines have also suffered, with Jin Air falling 6.9% to a near two-month low.
Since the beginning of 2024, the KOSPI has dropped 286 points, or 10.78%. Analysts predict the main stock market index will trade at approximately 2419.14 points by the end of this quarter, with a 12-month forecast estimating a further decrease to 2352.23.
Investment Strategy for KOSPI Index Amid Political Instability:
1. Short Position in the KOSPI Index: Given the recent sharp declines in the KOSPI and the prediction of further downturns, initiating a short position on the KOSPI could be a strategic move to capitalize on the expected decrease in the index's value. The target levels are approximately 2419.14 points by the end of this quarter and 2352.23 points over the next 12 months.
2. Use of Put Options: To hedge against potential further market volatility and downturns, investing in put options on the KOSPI Index can provide additional downside protection while limiting the risk to the premium paid for the options.
3. Sector-Specific Short Positions: Given the notable declines in specific sectors, such as defense (LIG Nex1), chemicals (LG Chem), and airlines (Jin Air), consider taking short positions on these stocks or similar sector indices. These sectors may continue to be negatively impacted by political instability.
4. Monitor Political Developments: Stay informed about political developments in South Korea, as any signs of stabilization or resolution could quickly reverse market sentiment and affect positions.
5. Conservative Allocation and Risk Management: Given the unpredictable nature of political events, it's crucial to allocate capital conservatively and implement strict risk management measures, such as stop-loss orders and position size limits, to protect against unexpected market movements.
